Do A Good Job Of Compacting Asphalt Pavement In Three Steps

The vibration roller is an important part of road repair engineering for asphalt pavement rolling work. How to smoothly complete the compaction work determines the progress of the whole project. There are two factors that affect the compaction and smoothness of asphalt concrete structure: compaction temperature and compaction method.

If the asphalt compaction is not in place, after the heavy vehicles roll on the pavement, it will be pitted, which will affect the safety of the driving vehicles. The compaction temperature is determined by the field test temperature personnel directing the rolling time and rolling location.


 

The critical points of the compaction method are as follows:

1. Compaction should be carried out according to the principle of top-down, static linear pressure compaction first and then centrifugal force compaction, with a single rolling distance as long as possible to fully exert the stability of the compaction force; 

2. The vibration roller should follow the paver closely, not too far away, so as to control the temperature. All-wheel marks should be eliminated before the final compaction and the operation should be stopped immediately to avoid vibration; 

3. Overlap compaction can be used to eliminate wheel marks. During compaction, the adjacent rolling width is overlapped by 1/3 to 1/2, and the lower side is gradually moved to the higher side from the cross-section; 

4. If the direction of the paver is not in the same section but in a stair shape, the distance should be staggered each time during compaction, usually half a meter. The first compaction distance is long and the following distance gradually decreases.

5. Pay attention to the water spray of the vibration roller, which should be non-adherent wheel appropriate, and during the compaction process, turning, braking, or stopping is not allowed except for the terminal situation.


 

Specific compaction steps

1. Primary compaction

The temperature of the primary compaction should be above 150℃, start the machine and use the steel wheel compactor to press 1~2 times with a speed of no more than 2km/h, and keep it uniform. Compaction on the flat surface, the drive wheel in front, facing the paver, and the passive wheel in the back. In the case of a slope, whether uphill or downhill, the drive wheel is at the lowest point.

2. Re-compaction

After the primary compaction is completed, re-compaction can be performed. At this time, the temperature of the road surface should not be lower than 125℃. First, use a heavy double-wheel vibration roller to vibrate and compact 4 times, the speed is kept at 4km/h~5km/h, then use a heavy tire vibration roller to compact 6 times, and the speed is kept at 3.5km/h~4.5km/h. Finally, depending on the effect, 1~2 compaction times can be added.

3. Final compaction

After the reconditioning is completed, the final compaction should be done immediately. At this time, the temperature of the road surface should be above 110℃. Close the vibration and use the Static Line Force compaction at a speed of 2km/h~3km/h.
